Ruth Hesselgrave papers, 1835-1984.

Chiefly diaries, correspondence, photographs, and travel journals recording the lives of Ruth Hesselgrave and her parents. While the collection includes letters of many other individuals and friends, the concentration is on the lives of these three people from the 1890s to 1930. Earlier family letters provide information on Ruth's grandparents and other relatives. The collection includes, but is not limited to: correspondence between Charles and Susie, correspondence between Ruth and her parents, Ruth and Richard Buffum, and between Ruth and many friends. Includes published writings of Charles Hesselgrave and material relating to his career as Congregational minister at Stanley Congregational Church, Chatham, N.J., clippings and other materials relevant to Ruth's career as teacher and assistant principal and her involvement with educational and women's groups. There are several discrete collections within the collection including the Fred C. Smith family (friends of Ruth Hesselgrave) papers, letters from Anna deLacy Hesselgrave McDonald (2nd wife of Charles Hesselgrave), Evarts/Everts genealogical research, Stanley Congregational Church, and Warren Harding High School. Correspondents and persons represented include Blanche Avaline Verder, Polly Upson Brown Kahler, Mary Louise (Smith) Boardman, J. Bushnell Smith, Marjory Wright Upson, and Adeline Redgrave.

Ruth Avaline Hesselgrave (1897-1991), like her parents, attended Middlebury College (1914-1918). After graduating from Middlebury, she went on to receive Masters degrees from Middlebury College and Yale University. Charles E. Hesselgrave (1868-1921), Ruth's father (Middlebury, 1893) maintained his connection to the college throughout Ruth's childhood by teaching at summer sessions.
